[wxPython] wxWindows Book

I would love to. The publisher wanted a book like John Grayson's TKinter programming
thus the emphasis on the GUI portion of wxPython. I just may take you up on that; I will see how the writing goes and come out with an addendum that could either be published by my publisher or release it as open source. You talked me into it.

Robin and Everyone,

I am currently writing a wxPython book for a large publisher. The book is
due in August, meaning it will be released in the early fall. Robin, as a
matter of fact, you did a review. (I'm the one who had been using wxWindows
so much, that I included a chapter on document/view architecture in wxPython
which of course is not supported. This has now been fixed I am happy to
report. I had to turn the proposal around very quickly and I am glad for
your poignant comments.) BTW, I am going to incorporate document/view
support for wxPython in the book and will be contributing the code to the
wxPython effort.

The book has sinced morphed of course because of all the feedback from the
reviews. I do cover wxWindows in part of the book, and tying everything
together between wxWindows, wxPython, and SWIG. SWIG will be covered, and
the basic wxWindows object hierarchy will be covered along with the event
system in the first two chapter.

This book is oriented strictly to the GUI programmer. That was the
percieved need at the time and frankly I was happy to oblige. The wxWindows
docs pertaining to the GUI portion of the framework will be translated as
the book progresses, and all of the wxPython GUI APIs will be included in an
appendix. This has been a need for quite awhile because some people do not
like to deal with the C++ docs. I will describe the peripheral classes as
needed in the course of presenting the GUI material in the book.

Since this is a book on wxPython, the majority of the book will focus on
using it with Python. However I am not turning my back on the lineage of
wxWindows and the hard work that everyone has put into it, and I will give
it as much coverage as I possibly can.

I hope this helps to answer at least part of your question.

Regards,
Gary Young

After recently moving away from tkinter to use wxPython ... I have found
that the only thing really letting this package down is lack of
documentation.

Would anyone be interested in helping to write/ contributing to a

wxWindows

open source book ?

Why not just add more content to the wxPyWiki? The cookbook seciton is a
bit unorganized at the moment, but there is a lot there that would make good
book fodder. OTOH, you could always add a new link on the Front page to a
set of more organized, book-like content.

There is also the wxPython-docs mail list.
