Hi,
I work at a university, and have developed some logic software (I
teach philosophy) to run under Windows NT. For various reasons I
would like to port this to run under Solaris on one of the university's
main Unix machines. So I have persuaded one of the Unix
administrators to try installing wxPython under Solaris. She has
run into problems which she describes in the messages below.
When I have occasionally, in the dim and distant part, put queries
to the wxPython list I have been very impressed by the help I have
received. I shall be most grateful if someone can explain how we
can solve our installation problems under Solaris.
Yours,
Roger Young

Subject: Re: More Python Stuff
Hello Roger - just to say that I downloaded the prerequisites for
python namely gtk and glib and they compiled fine. I then got
wxGTK and again this compiled with few problems. Unfortunately
when I got to wxpython, I had a whole lot of compile errors. I
struggled along reading the "lists" pages and trying a few of the
tricks they suggested and gradually got further and further until I
came to a dead end wxpython would not compile with that release
of wxGTK so I thought - no problem and got a new release of
wxGTK which would not compile at all! There was another person
on the lists site who had had the same problem but no one had
suggested any solutions as yet. So I then tried to get an older
version of wxpython - one which would be compatible with the
wxGTK version that had been successful - unfortunately they only
had binary releases for previous versions and these were, of
course, for intel platforms or for linux - no source code.
So I am afraid that I have now reached a dead end and have had to
turn my efforts to catching up with patches, security matters, web
problems etc.
The situation is : the only version of wxpython I have is wxpython-
2.3.1 and this will not compile with wxGTK-2.2.7, whcih was the
only version of wxGTK that I could compile. I had an error with
wxGTK-2.3.1 and with wxGTK 2.3.2 (b6) and although I could find
another person who had the same problem there were no answers
posted!
I'm sorry about this but it doesn't look as if I will be able to install
everything you wanted.
Best wishes
Carol
Hi Roger - when I try to compile wxGTK-2.3.2 I finally get (after
doing a
./configure --with-gtk --enable-permissive and then running gmake):-
Text relocation remains referenced
against symbol offset in file
strchr 0x8 /usr/local/libstdc++.a(index.o)
strrchr 0x8 /usr/local/libstdc++.a(rindex.o)
ld: fatal: relocations remain against allocatable but non-writable
sections collect2: ld returned 1 exit status gmake: ***
[lib/libwx_gtk-2.3.so.1.0.0] Error 1
Well - there it is - I'm afraid it doesn't mean much to me and I can't
find a suggestion as to what I can do/might be doing wrong.
If you can find a solution somewhere it would be very useful,
Many thanks
Carol
