I can't use pyMedia for Transana because it won't run on a Mac at this
point. I experimented with it a bit and really liked how easy it was to
work with, though I did run into speed issues in audio extraction. Might've
been my Python code rather than pyMedia causing that, though, I don't know.
Yeah, if you need Mac support pyMedia isn't going to cut it quite yet
As for the problems with the large files, try them out in Transana. You
might see the same sorts of seek problems there, which would suggest that
the problem is the video file not the Media Control. Most of the time I've
seen that problem, it's been due to something about the encoding of the
file, and re-encoding the video resolved the problem. *.WMV files seem to
be particularly bad, but could be fixed by converting to MPEG-2.
I didn't think about recoding the video. I'll have to give that a try.
And if you are serious about transcription, I'd invite you to join me in
working on Transana rather than re-inventing that particular wheel. On the
one hand, we're in pretty good shape and the program is working well in the
field. On the other hand, I've got a list as long as my arm of things I'd
like to add to the program, and am always happy to help people figure out
how to implement features they want to add themselves.
I'd definitely be interested in working on Transana. We were going to
use Transana, but we couldn't use all the database stuff thats
included. My people just want the playback, pause and jump back type
functionality. They also have some pretty specific requirements as far
as system-wide hotkeys and stuff like that. I wonder if the player
part of Transana could worked on separately?
