My son wants start programming in Python. He has almost no background in programming (but I can help). He will work on a Mac. Of course, he will like to do some GUI., Which products/versions should he used ?
- Python 2.7 + wxPython 2.9
- Python 3.3 + wxPython 3.0 (is that available on the Mac)
- Python 3.3 + wxPython Phoenix 3.0 macosx version
- Python 3.3 + some other GUI toolkit

Personally I'd avoid this, to me anything using Python 2.x is a backward step.

Start with this if you can, Phoenix is nearly there so should be good enough for your needs. Development downloads are available here Index of /Phoenix/snapshot-builds
- Python 3.3 + some other GUI toolkit
Please wash your mouth out with soap But on a serious note I've found the docs, especially the new style Phoenix docs, very good. This list is extremely helpful, plenty of other online resources via your search tool etc etc etc. All in all I'm extremely happy with my choice of toolkit.

My fellow Pythonistas, ask not what our language can do for you, ask what you can do for our language.
I started years ago with Python2. I continue to learn everyday…
I havn’t a day of school in me, yet I graduated with exceptional competance.
I truly enjoy what I do, and I do what I do.
I don’t recall exactly what version of Python or wxPython I really started out with…(I have so many archived now)
My suggestion would be start out with a picture of what he wants to do…
Python 2.7 + wxPython 2.8 or 2.9
I read a unindented book… Unplugged.
Then I read a Indented one… Unplugged.
Most can find this type of book(Indented Type) at your public library with a special type of librarian.
Maybe one day he will read my book.
My book requires no electricity or bills, as I have a good knowledge of the printing industry, and tact.
What It requires is someone willing to go to their local printshop and ask for it.
Pretty simple huh?.
Well, If he/her is interested in graphic or GUI, then I would recommend a book geared towards “games are fun” approach for real basics.
tic-tac-toe, type of stuff.
If he gets past that…, well let him go any way he wants to.
And don’t forget to support his/her ideas… They may seem strange at first, until they get a slight bit further into the project.
Good Luck. and maybe add PIL.haha
