Hey list,
I use thunderbird, however this comes strait to my email account. Is there a way to set this up as a news group in thunderbird? This email is so un-organized, and such a pain in the but to sort through. If not, are there any open source programs that specialize in handling these kinds of Mailing List emails?
Thanks,
Josh

Under "Tools" there's "Message filtering". You first create folders, then set up a rule to move mails to those folders. Look up the source of the messages with Ctrl+U and pick up a header to filter which doesn't came in other mails, like List-post.

You should configure a News account (Tools > Account Settings > New Account) that points to the news.gmane.org news server.
Just subscribe to the gmane.comp.pythonn.wxpython newsgroup and be done with it. I use this scheme with great satisfaction.

To unsubscribe, e-mail: wxPython-users-unsubscribe@lists.wxwidgets.org
For additional commands, e-mail: wxPython-users-help@lists.wxwidgets.org

As do I. One thing to note, though: when you first post to the list through Gmane, it'll send a "challenge" message to reply to, to prove you're a human rather than a spambot. A one-time minor annoyance to gain the convenience of gmane.
The alternative of using filters to move incoming messages into different folders is also nice, and helps to keep your inbox uncluttered.

After years of using procmail to sort incoming list messages
into different folders, I switch over and now access all
mailing lists via gmane. Now I never run out of disk quota on
the IMAP server like I used to due to a few high-volume mailing
lists.

Many mailing lists (I don't remembr if this is one of them)
still require that you be subscribed in order to post (even
through gmane). In those cases, just remain subscribed to the
list but shut off delivery.

That’s why I use the combination of Gmail & Thunderbird. Even
wxPython busy mailing list can’t challenge gmails quota. Another reason
is that I find googling for messages in gmail more productive than
searching for it in Thunderbird.

How do you do that? Thunderbird doesn't show me a list of groups to subscribe
to. It tries to fetch the list though, but it is empty. I have not found a way
to subscribe manually.

How do you do that?
edit -> account settings
click "add account"
click "newsgroupt account"
enter real-name and e-mail, click "next"
enter news.gmane.org as server name, click "next"
enter an account name (e.g. gmane), click "next"
click "finish"
click "OK"
click on the new gmane entry in the folders pane.
click "manage newsgroups"
<newsgroups are downloaded>
click down through the tree widget to gmane.comp.python.wxpython
check the box next to gmane.comp.python.wxpython
click "OK"
click on the new g.c.p.wxpython entry in the folders pane.
a dialog comes up asking how many headers to download
click "OK" to accept the default of 500 (or change it if you want)
<headers are downloaded>
threads appear in the right-hand pane.

And now I'm posting this followup via Thunderbird. It even knows
not to top post (and how to quote). I don't like the way it handles
paragraph formatting though...

As I said the tree is empty. I see a progress bar while he tries to fetch the
group list but at the end nothing is displayed.
I just checked with knode (on linux) and even there the group list is empty. I
can contact news.gmane.org at port 119 using telnet so the network seems ok.
Any other ideas? Apologies, as this is rather off-topic.
I found out that gmane does not like my ISP. SSH tunneling to some other host
works. Thanks anyway.
That's very odd. When you telnet to the NNTP port on
news.gmane.org, you get a message like this?
$ telnet news.gmane.org 119
Trying 80.91.229.5...
Connected to news.gmane.org.
Escape character is '^]'.
200 news.gmane.org InterNetNews NNRP server INN 2.4.1 ready (posting ok).
And you can do commands like this?
help
[... list of NNTP commands ...]
list active
[... long list of newsgroups ...]
