Unless I am missing something, as usual. Is there any idea around for
the wxPython GSoC of this year? Any proposal to improve this beautiful
framework?
Of course, I'd put in for the MVC & unit tests projects again, but another thing that comes to mind is a Py 3 migration project. It may not be a full summer project by itself, so we should probably have some clause where they'll work on other things if they finish, but it's possible it could require us to come up with some pretty creative solutions to keep 2.4 and 2.5 compatibility while being compatible with Py 3 as well.
I'll defer to Robin for a final call on whether Py 3 migration has enough meat in it for SoC, but just a thought.
Thanks,
Kevin

I'd like to do GSoC again, though I don't think I can be a primary mentor this year -- I'll be on vacation for a month this summer ( In Europe -- were are you ow, Andrea?).
Anyway the first step is to get us registered as a mentoring organization, then we can post project ideas as before -- it definately works better to post a good set of ideas for students to choose from -- they are still free to come up with their own, but if good ideas are there, we're more likely to get ones we like.
Robin -- are you up for it again this year?

I seriously doubt it will be that easy! There is a lot of code in wxPython, and while SWIG is py3k compatible, I don't know that all the bugs have been worked out yet.
But anyway, we could certainly put a few "if there is time" items on the list: making use of the new extended buffer protocol, for one.
Kevin, are you planning on any wxWebKit GSoC projects?

At the moment in London, but for sure I will bring my beautiful ladies
on holiday in Italy and Greece this summer... and maybe somewhere
else, we'll see.
In any case, I still would like to be a mentor: there are obviously
many more wxPython users more experienced than me, so I may end up
like the last two years GSoC :-D. Not that it mattered so much, I
still received the Google t-shirt
If the proposals stay as they are up to now (Py3K, unit testing,
wxWebKit, MVC), I'd say that Kevin, Chris and Robin should be the
preferres choices as mentors. If anything else (closer to what I am
specialized in) comes out, I am more than willing to participate as a
mentor.

True, I'm just thinking that 2to3 might allow us to pretty quickly see what most of the issues are, even for the SWIG output. Often tracking down issues is harder than fixing them.

Yes, I'm thinking of a plugins, frames and/or layout tests project for this year. The question is where to put it. wxPython may not be the best place due to the fact that we probably don't have a lot of hardcore C++ guys here. wxWidgets will probably get very few slots if any at all, which leaves WebKit, but there's a lot of competition there (though probably a lot of slots too, especially now that Chrome exists). If wxPy went under Py we probably will get very few of their available slots, maybe only one, so I'd rather not take that up too. I guess we'll have to see the org list before we can make a final call.
Thanks,
Kevin

It depends... It might be too much depending on what the unforeseen problems turn out to be.
