wxWindows Software Foundation

Well the news has leaked out on wx-dev (along with a firestorm of objections from a couple individuals) that there is now a wxWindows Software Foundation being formed. Please see http://www.wxwindows.org/sf/index.htm for more details. If you have questions or complaints, please free to ask me.

Robin,

Thank you for sharing this, this is outstanding news!

The wxWSF will help greatly in future development of
wxWindows**. More importantly, the wxWSF is pivotal
to expand the usage of wxWindows.

Yep. I am "almost" a Board member now in that I am kept in the loop and consulted in all the moves the wxSF takes. I'll probably be taking my turn on the Board when one of the member's term expires.

Out of curiosity, how does the copyright assignment thing affect wxPython
contributions?

Along those lines, how small a contribution should we consider signing
for? I submitted one patch, which was accepted--is it worth signing
for that?

The wxPython code is also going to be under the wxSF umbrella so I am asking for copyright assignments for the wxPython code contributions as well. It doesn't make very much difference in how the code is or can be used by the project or by the contributor of the code, but it does make it defensible in court if there is ever a need to protect the code from outside forces trying to destory or hurt the project, or if there is breach of license, etc.

We don't know the answer to that yet. My guess is that 5 or 10 lines of code probably doesn't matter, but it still wouldn't hurt (and may help if my guess is wrong) to send in the signed form even if it is that small.

Robin,

Seems harmless. What are your thoughts? Is this an OK thing in your opinion?

Yes. In fact a "Good Thing" in my opinion. The squeaky wheels over in wx-dev have got me thinking that maybe some of the finer details may need to be tweaked a bit, (I'm sure the Board will be discussing things soon,) but I think that the direction we are trying to go with this is good.
