OK, for the record, copying /wxPython-unicode-2.8.7.1 (Mike, thanks for the pointer) to /usr/local/lib does eliminate the error I was getting, and now 2.8.7.1 is the default version of wx, which is what I wanted. On the other hand, I'm not getting 2.8.8.1 to run at all, so far.
I think, as Chris hinted, my various versions of both wx and python are pretty much a mess, probably because of upgrading the OS without taking care of the different versions, and I need to go through carefully some time and get rid of some cruft to figure out what's going on. For now, the versions I need seem to be running smoothly, so I'll leave it at that.
Thanks,
Ian

Tracking it further it seems that the 2.8.8.1 install did stomp on the
2.8.7.1 in that it may have deleted
/usr/local/lib/wxPython-unicode-2.8.7.1
and substituted
/usr/local/lib/wxPython-unicode-2.8.8.1
