It's somewhat cryptic, but wxTextCtrl.SetFont() works. LOL - time for a break.
fwiw - I changed from a wxStyledTxtCtrl to a wxTextCtrl and kept all the other code the same. The last character is saved with the wxTextCtrl but not with a wxStyledTxtCtrl. Looks like a bug.
