[wxPython] Is there still an interest in a wxPython book?

Hello Everyone,

I had announced months ago that I was working on a wxPython book and that it would be out this September. Well, my “real job” pushed the schedule out considerably and I am looking at a publish date of April 1, 2003.

I wanted to do a straw poll and insure that there is still substantial interest in a wxPython book before I move forward (my publisher is requiring me to do this :)).

Please respond if you feel it is still needed (this of course is my sentiment), and I would also like feedback on where people’s interests are and what they would like to see in the book. The original manuscript and outline are based on information that is several months old, and I want to insure that everyone gets what they want (if possible of course).

Thanks and I look forward to hearing from all of you.

It would be wonderful to have a wxPython book !!!

Personal intersts are:
1) Strong focus on grids and how to manipulate them, from linking them to
dbs to customizing their looks behaviour and editors
2) Appendix on how to follow and read main structure of its source code
3) How the unicode support works
4) Tricks and tweaks on interaction with ActiveX controls

Kind regards

Yes I would love to see a book on wxPython. Personally, I would like to
see a focus on GUI programming from the ground up since Python is the
only language I'm using for application development and haven't come
from languages like Visual C++ where I might have learned the concepts.

I would be interested in such a book. I think the most important thing to include is lots of good examples. I have to second the comment about including a section of wxGrid. I'd also add validators as another area where a broad overview followed by a variety of short, specific examples, would be useful.

I am planning to use python and wxPython to teach object oriented programming to design students (engineering and architecture). As I am moving away from C++. For this reason it will be nice to have a wxPython book that proceeds as a text book. i.e. (this may not be satisfactory to other people but perhaps you will find a solution) the book should largely tackle a problem for example the design and implementation of a small piece of software with objects such as a game or an elevator. Of course this should be done in a GUI.

This will make it possible to consecutively progress from simple to complex and also to understand how the language combines with design notations such as UML. This is may not be very important because python reads so well but...

This process, I think, will address the needs of beginners as well as experienced users and be useful in a class room setting for learning and applying object oriented software programming.

In my limited exposure to wxPython (which still continues as I am doing away with C++), I personally find sizers to be difficult. This has become trivial since I started using wxGlade 0.1.3 (thanks to Griggio and Barisione) but will like to understand it more fundamentally.

I hope these are sensible requests to you.

Great input! I am thinking along similar lines.

Thanks!

This is definitely turning into a "from the ground up" book from all the
requests that have been floating around. Originally, I had intended to just
get "something out there" to help promote wxPython, but now it is obvious I
would be doing the wxPython community a disservice if I didn't create a
definitive book.

Thanks!

I'd be interested in a book too, and like Joel, would prefer something
from the ground up. I hate reading stuff that says "This is just like
Java (or C++) only easier," and then assumes you already know these
"harder" languages. Don't let the book give the impression that C++ is
a prerequisite for using wxPython effectively.

Grids have attracted a lot of attention and will be covered in detail. I
had planned on spending some time discussing the internals/SWIG/C++, etc. so
that should make you and a lot of users happy.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I would like to see cross-platform issues addressed, like maybe a chapter or
an appendix on what to avoid, snags and what to use for things like
    lock files
    config management
    current user info
    etc

also tools to use to make an binary, .exe file. out of wxPython and python
code.

I would also be intereseted in an appendeix detailing how wxPython was made.
like using what tools/code to interface with the c code

SWIG, C/C++, and the relationship with wxWindows are discussed in detail.
Your other concerns are duly noted.

Thanks!
