After getting some system updates yesterday, there are serious issues on
Ubuntu Gutsy with wxpython from the standard universe repositories.
Programs as SPE, wxGlade, the wxPython demo and probably many more...
are affected. These are example outputs:
[...]
... the same story happens. However it reveals that the problem might be
related to the toolbar. Indeed if I try to launch the ToolBar.py script
of the wxPython demo, it shows up the frame but when clicking the button
to launch a frame with a toolbar it crashes. I found out the that the
toolbar demo crashes on the check toolbar button. Disable it and the
toolbar demo starts fine.
While debugging SPE with the excellent winpdb debugger, I found out that
these bitmaps from the art provider also always generate crashes:
wx.ART_REPORT_VIEW, wx.ART_LIST_VIEW
Note this doesn't crash all applications, only some dependent of the
toolbar configuration.
I don't have ubuntu installed, so I can't really say anything, but...
maybe the problem is not in the toolbar, since wxGlade does not use a
toolbar at all for its frames: it does create toolbars when the user
adds a "Toolbar" to the GUI that's being edited, but if I understand
correctly what you say, you see the crash immediately, right? Also,
both the bitmap you mention above are not used by wxGlade - so I guess
the problem is somewhere else...

I guess in that case it is maybe related to creating bitmap buttons of
which wxGlade has plenty as well.
Checking some other wxpython IDE's (Ulipad, peppy, editra), none of them work. Only winpdb seems to survive.
