Where to list Programmer job?

Dear All,

I'm probably on thin ice here with this topic, so I'll apologize in advance, but I was wondering if folks have an opinion for good sites on which to post a Python programming job ... particularly for someone with good (to greatly fantastic) wxPython skills?

I'm in a NIH funded medical imaging lab, and their grants won't fund our using a paid-for recruiting service, so I thought I'd tap a few communities resources. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks so much,

Brian.

The Python Job Board is a good place to go: Python Job Board | Python.org

You might see if the PyCon organizers have some kind of place to put that info on their website or if you plan to go, you could set up a BoF meeting there to talk about your job opening.

I don't think so, we are all interested in jobs!

I'd post on the relevant mailing lists -- wxPython, c.l.p, maybe numpy and scipy or image-sig...

You might also see if there is a Python Interest Group (PIG) in your area. We found someone through SeaPIG a few years ago that has worked out great. I think you'll have good luck with folks that take part in interest groups, go to python conferences, etc -- they are the folks that are taking an interest in their work beyond looking for a paycheck.

I work in an NIH-funded structural biology software group. I saw the announcement for my position on a mailing list for crystallography software, most of which is written by biologists/chemists/physicists. I didn’t actually have any wxPython knowledge, and I doubt more than a handful of people on the list did, but Python is becoming heavily used in our field and I’d been using it exclusively for a couple of years. I suspect there are similar lists (BioPython, as well as the ones Chris Barker mentioned) that might be good places to post (if it’s okay with the admins). Most of the people reading it will (like me) be trained as scientists rather than programmers, and there probably won’t be many with GUI experience. However, compared to crystallographic math and biochemistry, I didn’t find the learning curve for wxPython to be very steep, and sometimes having a working knowledge of the application is just as useful as the toolkit skills.

There are several other python projects aimed at similar people, e.g. matplotlib and the Enthought tools, as well as more general toolkits that also integrate with Python, such as VTK or ITK. Not sure how active these lists are. Might as well post it on Craigslist too if you don’t mind weeding out a lot of junk - there are a many good jobs posted there (at least in the SF area) and I wouldn’t hesitate to look there if I was seeking employment.
