Thanks for the explanation. This, then, raises two other, related
questions. First, do I need to change the code from the separate directory
and file name dialogs? Second, how do I display a list of available files in
the selected (or default) directory when they're not shown in a list?
I suspect that the answer to the first will help me to eliminate the
GTK-related errors I'm still seeing on the console.

What you're seeing is the native GTK dir dialog, not the generic
Windows-like version that was being used for older versions of GTK. If
you click on the "Browse for other folders" text (it's actually a
collapsible panel) then it will expose other widgets and you'll be able to
select other folders.
