Style question about using menu icons

I recently upgraded from Fedora 12 to 14 and noticed my wxPython app
no longer showed menu icons. I vaguely recalled a Gnome setting but
couldn't find it. After a reminder from Robin and a little googling, I
read that the System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Interface tab had
been removed by the Gnome developers on purpose to promote a "cleaner"
UI. Installing gconf-editor allowed me to make the needed change to
restore them. Now for my question. On Mac OS and Vista, I've noticed
that menu icons are rather few and far between which I assume is on
purpose. Since there are some very experienced developers on this
list, can you comment on this trend? Is this something those of us
less experienced in UI design should adopt? If so, what criteria do
you use to decide when to include menu icons or not?

Thanks,
Dan

If you mean Icons beside the menu item, I personally like them, it adds some more color and life (IMO) to the otherwise drab menu!
