Just a note without my patch I do not receive the dialog box
asking if I want to close the tree window at all maybe a bug
in my setup that was causing me to require this patch in the
first place.
No, there is no error in your setup. If you are using PyAUI 0.9.2 with the demo, I have implemented the handling of wx.EVT_CLOSE event only for *some* of the panes, when they are *docked*. The left tree pane is one of them (when you start with the default configuration). Your patch is useful to tell the developer that the user is closing a floating frame (because for docked panes the event is already there, and it can be vetoed). I am trying to figure it out on how to use your patch to handle the vetoing of the event, but it is not very easy to implement (and at the moment I am doing something else 
).
