I do not agree. DVI <-> METAFONT. pdf/ps <-> TypeN fonts. In short, the
glyphs in METAFONT are different for every available font size, this is not the case for Type1 fonts.

I just "googled" and I found some tools. I would have been realy
surprised, if I had not found a tool like this in the TeX world!
About text rendering engines, there are also the emmerging OpenDocument
(OASIS) viewers. Eg http://visioo-writer.tuxfamily.org/, I downloaded it and made a few tests. Interestingly it uses GTK and ...Python.
