Take a look at
http://wiki.wxpython.org/index.cgi/wxPyGridTableBase.
This is in the wxPyWiki, and it describes a layer of software you put
between a Grid and your data so that it doesn't have to all get loaded into
your grid just to get a view of some small part of it.
It's exactly what I'm looking for.
Also the Demo has a little on this subject as I recall, under core
Windows/controls-> Grid
