You'll probably have better luck using a wxFlexGridSizer or a wx.GridBagSizer.
I suggest that you play with sizer layouts in a tool like XRCed or wxGlade to help you get a better idea of how they do their job, and how different parameters affect layout. Don't jump into the tool with the sole desire of solving this particular problem, but take the time to experiment and get a better feel for the Sizer philosophy. You'll eventually have an "Ah ha!" moment and sizers will start to make sense for you.
