i'm such a dope. i was using the wxPython251 .h file but
had forgotten to install the 251 site packages into python.
so it crashed cause it couldn't find wx._core

Take a look at the end of wxPython.h. It defines a macro
for SWIG_Python_newvarlink (2.5.1 version, 2.4 is similar
but different.) My
version will first call wxPyCoreAPI_IMPORT, which imports
wx._core
(or wxPython.wxc in 2.4.x) and then loads a value from an
object in that module.
