CPU load increase for mouse wheel scroll after update to 2.6.1.0

I just updated from 2.5.3.1 to 2.6.1.0 on Mac OS X 10.3.9.
I'm seeing around 50% to 100% more CPU being used
to scroll a list control with mouse wheel.

Is this a known issue? What changed and what can I do about it?
