best Linux distro for python developement

Hello,
I normally use linux for python development - for a variety of personal
preference reasons. I have found the distro I am using a little finicky
on a couple of issues. (I am not going to say what it is - I am not
trying to start a flame war).

Things that have been a concern to me.
Installing that images library so it's in my path.
Getting freeze to work with Numeric, WxPython, and Report lab
Recompiling Python from source. - I suspect that ties into the
  freeze issue also.

If you could care to comment on python and linux on those issues. The
other alternative I have thought about is windows with a three headed
display so I could at least have enough screen room.

As I may be going from hobbiest to serious programmer (last week
someone called $125,000 reasonable for some code I wrote, but it's not
official yet).
