Sorry to say, I'm being made redundant on Thursday, with my last working
day on March 31st.
So I'm going to unsubscribe, until I can focus on something other than
hunting for work.
If anyone on the list works in the UK and can use a half-decent Python
developer, please drop me a line.

You might be able to find something by digging around on the PyCon pages.
Try to match up the names on the map with the attendees:
https://us.pycon.org/2009/register/default/maps

The only UK Python firm that pops to my mind is Resolver Systems...and whatever it is that Gavana works for...
Good luck!
Mike
Dear Ranec,
Sorry to hear that. Though it is an unpleasant situation, it is always an experience that strengthen one’s character and enhance one’s confidence. People grow in the line of fire. Trust me ! (I’m about 60 and know what I’m talking about).
As Mike says, there are a number of places to search for. Don’t forget also that more and more companies accept developers to work from home. So you might consider working for a company outside UK too.
Right after this mail I will send you an invitation to subscribe to a Gmail account. When using Gmail, the servers google the text of your mails (incoming and outgoing) and give you a selection of links (they appear as ads in a small column at the right side of the browser) that MIGHT be of interest because they relate to words found in your mails. Recently I saw in these ads a Dutch firm looking for Python and Zope (or Plone ?) developers. Feel free to ignore the invitation. I’m not a promoter
Wish you good luck !
Regards, Rene
PS: I don’t think there is a need to unsubscribe to the list. On the contrary stay in touch with the community.

Don’t unsubscribe!
I didn’t do it… but I did the next worst thing that I could do: I started to ignore the list… let it pile up in a GMail folder… take a look from time to time.
IT WAS MY WORST MISTAKE AS A PROGRAMMER!
I now try to reconnect and it is very difficult…
If anything else… now that you don’t have your job… you should put even more time on the list.
Help the beginners. Polish your knowledge… FOOD WILL COME!
Programming is not only about pushing lines of code for a paycheck… is about being passionate about the code… about finding happiness in code…
Passion is what will end-up saving you.

Also sign up for Linkedin if you haven't already. It's an excellent way to network with other professionals: http://www.linkedin.com/
I suppose I should note that the list on the PyCon site will only get larger the closer we get to PyCon, so keeping an eye on it will probably be a good idea. I've used Monster (http://www.monster.com/) and had a head hunter call me, so it works if you market yourself well.
Finally, I concur with Peter and Rene. Don't unsubscribe! Keeping your coding skills sharp will make you that much better.
Mike
I wholeheartedly agree with Peter’s comment about “Passion is what will
end up saving you.”
When times are rough and employers have a larger pool of applicants
from which to choose, I believe that seeing passion makes a big
difference in who gets the job and who doesn’t.
I love my work and try to assure that comes across in my resume and
interviews. I’ll never know for certain, but I believe that was a
significant factor in getting me a new job a couple of months ago.
I will also put in my recommendation for LinkedIn.com (that someone
mentioned) as a way to find contacts. I found Dice.com to be an
excellent source for job postings without all the clutter found on
other sites (if it covers the UK for you, that is).
Best wishes!
