AUIToolbar crashing -- is there a workaround?

I'm stuck with wxPython 2.8.9.1 which crashes due to a bug in
AUIToolbar (Ticket #10461 [1])

Is there a known workaround other than upgrading my version of
wxPython? I don't mind monkeypatching if necessary.

I tried downloading using aui from
http://xoomer.virgilio.it/infinity77/main/AUI.html but it has its own
issues (BestSize doesn't seem to work...)

Try downloading the latest version of that widget from SVN:

http://svn.wxwidgets.org/svn/wx/wxPython/3rdParty/AGW/agw/

I don't think any of Andrea's widgets depend on anything in the latest
version of wxPython...
