As an aside, I find that if I turn "Hardware Acceleration" off in my video
card settings within Windows, I CAN capture video as part of a screen shot,
while I can't see the video if "Hardware Acceleration" is enabled. You
might see if that affects your ability to grab the windows contents during
video playback.

If this really prevents grabbing the window contents (and also if not),
does anyone know how to fix it?
In my experience all the movie players, especially ones that play
DVDs do some magic that results in being unable to capture their
contents. At the simplest level, try pressing PrintScreen and
note how you always just get a black box rather than any frame.
