You can try StackOverflow. There are several big Python names there
that help people out. I haven't used c.l.py in a while. Did they
really degenerate that much?

Doesn’t seem like it to me; the OP got about a dozen informative answers back to his question there (though a little snarkiness, too, but probably still lower than a lot of public forums).
The main reason I stopped using it was because of all the spam. That
and there were one or two fellows on there that just didn't like it
when I gave answers that were too simple.
