2.5.2 is coming

There will probably be a 2.5.2 release of wxWidgets in the next few weeks. The target is the end of the month, I'm guessing that it will be slipping by a week or two because of the schedules of some of the core developers.

Anyway, this message is just for a heads-up that it is coming relativly soon and that I'll be starting a 2.5.2.x wxPython release cycle as soon as possible after that.

I suppose things are in too much flux to get a 2.5.1.6 out then so that 2.5.1.5 can be obliterated? This will also give us a chance to pound on wxMAC some more. Otherwise given wxWidgets developer delays, time for you to start your release process, multiple release candidates for those of us on wxPython-dev to check, etc. we might be looking at another month given how these things tend to take longer than expected.

I'll will be completely away from my computer June 16 - 20, so I won't be able to test anything against PythonCard at that time. I may be away the week after as well, but that isn't decided yet.

It's not complete yet, but the current CHANGES.txt for wxPython is here:

http://cvs.wxwidgets.org/viewcvs.cgi/wxWidgets/wxPython/docs/CHANGES.txt

And there is one for wxWidgets here:

http://cvs.wxwidgets.org/viewcvs.cgi/wxWidgets/docs/changes.txt

and what about mac
os 10.3 fixes?

wxMac on Carbon has had a lot of fundamental and architecture changes done "under the hood." The Classic code has been split off into a separate set of code and so without that burden wxMac-Carbon is able to take more advantage of the new abilities of the OS X platform. For example all the windows/controls are real platform windows now (it was just the top level windows before) so all of the hacks dealing pounding that model into the wxWidgets model (square peg, round hole) have been removed. There are still some kinks being worked out with what is implemented so far, (which is one of the reasons I havn't done a 2.5.1.6 yet,) and I think that there is still more migration to new Carbon abilities and standard APIs that is going to be done over time, but it is looking real good.

Kevin O., did I leave anything out?

Probably. Things in wxWidgets are just now getting to the point that I feel comfortable doing a release, and I also still have a few things on my ToDo list that I think should get into the release.

As it is I doubt that I'll get to the multiple version installed thing that was discussed a while back. There are some installer related issues that I havn't had time to think through yet. Maybe this would be a good subject for a sprint in July...

Anyway, once I get through my list I think we can start a release cycle regardless of wxWidgets being ready for 2.5.2. or not. If they are slow then I can move my copy of the version numbers back to 2.5.1 and we can do another 2.5.1.x release. If they are close to being ready but not released yet then we can just call it a 2.5.2 beta or something. In either case, the more people on this list that are able to build and test the CVS version the better.

Not really, if anything I'd just add that all this work not only lets us take advantage of new technologies, but makes the overall codebase more stable and easier to maintain. =)

Thanks,

Kevin

I would like to see at least one more 2.5.1 release, if only so it can get some testing which will hopefully improve the 2.5.2 release. =)

If there are any Mac-specific items on your list, let me know and I'll take a look at them. I've been working on wxWebKit but that's looking pretty good now, and a nice wxPythonOSX release is pretty high on my priority list right now. With wxMozilla working with wxPython on Mac (mostly), I should be able to get a solid release of my app on Mac out after 2.5.2 goes out the door, so the sooner 2.5.2 goes out the door, the sooner I can get my app out. =)

Thanks,

Kevin
